Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park is a vast protected wilderness in southeastern Tanzania, created in 2019 from the northern portion of the historic Selous Game Reserve. It is Tanzania's largest national park and one of Africa's largest protected areas, renowned for its expansive river systems, rich wildlife, and comparatively uncrowded safari experience.
Landscape and wildlife
The park is centered on the Rufiji River, whose braided channels, oxbow lakes, floodplains, and wetlands create one of East Africa's most important ecosystems. Habitats range from miombo woodlands and riverine forests to open grasslands, supporting elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 430 bird species. Nyerere is especially recognized as a major stronghold for the endangered African wild dog.
Safari experience
Unlike many safari destinations, Nyerere is well known for offering boat safaris on the Rufiji River in addition to traditional game drives. Guided walking safaris are also available, allowing visitors to explore the park's ecology on foot with trained rangers. The relatively low visitor numbers contribute to a quieter, more remote wilderness experience than many of Tanzania's northern parks.
History and conservation
The park was officially established in 2019 and named after Tanzania's founding president, Julius Nyerere. It occupies the northern section of the former Selous Game Reserve, whose broader landscape has long been internationally recognized for its biodiversity. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the Rufiji watershed, wildlife corridors, anti-poaching initiatives, and partnerships with local communities.
Current context
Nyerere remains one of Tanzania's flagship conservation areas, but it has also been part of broader debates over balancing conservation with infrastructure development. In particular, the nearby Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project has attracted international attention because of concerns about potential impacts on the surrounding ecosystem while also being promoted as a major source of electricity for Tanzania.
